Bring a Global Scholar to the SCE Annual Meeting

It is not too early to begin to think about appropriate candidates to recommend as a Global Scholar for the 2023 Annual Meeting in Costa Mesa, California. The SCE’s International Scholarly Relations Committee (ISRC) has assumed direct responsibility for the Global Scholars Program. They will send out a reminder in the late summer or early fall inviting members to identify international scholars whom they would be willing to sponsor. These proposals from member sponsors will be due October 14, 2021, and should be sent to the SCE’s Executive Director, Andrea Taylor, at [email protected] . She will process them and forward them to the current chair of the IRSC, Simeon Ilesanmi.  With this letter of nomination, SCE sponsors should supply an affirmation of the standing of the scholar, biographical information about the candidate, and a detailed 300-word abstract for a concurrent paper that the global scholar would deliver if selected.

Proposals will be weighed by the ISRC in its committee meeting at the 2022 Annual Meeting.  Sponsors submitting proposals will be notified of their decision before the end of January 2022.  The Global Scholar selected by the ISRC will, upon formally accepting the invitation, be recommended to the Program Committee for the 2023 Annual Meeting so that a concurrent session can be reserved for the presentation of the proposed paper.

The SCE can name no more than one Global Scholar at any given meeting because the Global Scholar’s travel expenses (not to exceed $4,000) will now be assumed by the SCE.  It is no longer expected that the Global Scholar’s SCE visit will be coordinated with appearances at other institutions on a cost-sharing basis; however, sponsors and Global Scholars remain welcome to work out visits to other sites independently of the SCE.

Please note that the Society does not and will not apply for or pay for visas.  The Executive Director will, however, willingly issue a formal letter of invitation to support the scholar’s visa application.  If you have any immediate questions about this program, feel free to contact Andrea Taylor at [email protected] or to get in touch directly with Simeon Ilesanmi the current chair of the IRSC, at [email protected] .
