Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) is looking for a research assistant in theological anthropology. The position will be for a term of 3 years (2010-2013) with a possible 1 year extension, beginning 1 November 2010, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Anthropos, a newly organized interdisciplinary research group based at the Faculty of Theology of the K.U. Leuven, is seeking to develop a renewed theological anthropology rooted in the Christian tradition and in dialogue with current sciences and philosophy. This group of fundamental theologians and theological ethicists will articulate a framework enabling Christians to take positions on contemporary ethical, cultural, and social questions as well as to participate in discussions and decision making.

In a Ph D project entitled 'Created in God’s Image? Human Nature in Dispute' a renewed theological understanding of the human person will be developed by discussing both the Catholic Natural Law tradition and the Modern personalist approach. These will be brought into discussion with contemporary challenges such as neo-Darwinism, gender studies and postmodern philosophical critiques of human subjectivity. The candidate will be encouraged to develop her or his own specific research topic within the research group’s overall project.

Your profile:

• Capacity to cope with complex challenges within a contemporary social and religious context.
• Experience working across the disciplines of philosophy, humanities or the natural sciences is a plus.
• Ability to read German and/or French texts will allow the researcher to participate within contemporary theological debates.
